Vojensky technicky a skusobny ustav Zahorie - VTSU Zahorie (Military Technical and Testing Institute) has been for years the development and testing institute of the Slovak Ministry of Defence. This institute, since its beginning in 1923, has been dealing with testing of the military equipment of the army military equipment. During the period of the 70s and 80s of the last century there was running a build up of another testing objects and range enhancement. Until the former CSFR had broken up, the institute was intended to be the testing base. By the arising of the new state of Slovakia there was also transferred the research and development activity for the purposes of the Slovak MoD.

At present VTSU is one of the scientific-research work stations as a base of MoD. VTSU secures research, development and testing of explosives, ammunition and weapons of the land forces. It has also been built to be the modern testing laboratory in the field of weapons, explosives and ammunition. It has the one accredited laboratory for testing the military items, weapons, ammunition and explosives. (Certificate of Accreditation Certificate No. S145). Laboratory is obliged to observe requirements of the standards of STN EN ISO/IEC 17025. VTSÚ has been dealing with methods development of means of the armament material protection against severe environmental influence. A great attention is dedicated to a present activity transfer to the activity in accordance with NATO, EU standards requirements at the all areas of VTSU activity. VTSU is authorized for the quality assessment in the course of law 264/1999 Z.z., performs the explosive material classification in accordance with UN recommendation for the transport of dangerous materials based on the mandate of the Ministry of transport, posts and telecommunication.
