MAN, one of Europe's traditional truck manufacturers, commenced production of commercial vehicles for civilian and military deployment in 1915. The building of all-wheel drive military vehicles for off-road operation started early on, experience from the civilian vehicles benefiting the military vehicles - and vice versa. The effects of large-scale production of all the major components that go into a commercial vehicle are long service life (high durability), a cost-benefit ratio which is right for the market and advantageous spare part logistics. A dense service and workshop network in many countries ensures short vehicle downtimes and rapid spare parts back-up.
