Bofors has developed an improved 40 mm L/70 APFSDS-T Mk II IM round that can defeat all AFVs and penetrate the side armour of MBTs. DESIGN APFSDS-T Mk II IM can be fired at maximum rate of fire and is constructed of a tungsten penetrator, stabilized by four fins and a triple sectioned sabot. APFSDS-T Mk II IM carries a slipping driving band which, combined with the special segmented front-sabot, gives safe and reliable ramming, firing and separation of the sabot. The penetrator is also equipped with a tracer that burns over a distance of approximately 1500 meters. The propellant charge and the primer are of Insensitive Munition type. APFSDS-T Mk II IM fulfills the environmental requirements for stowage on wheeled and tracked vehicles. PERFORMANCE AND EFFECT APFSDS-T Mk II IM round is highly accurate with an extremely short time of flight and high hit probability. The drag is low enabling in high impact velocity even at extended combat range. The projectile has a muzzle velocity approx. of 1500 m/s with virtually no deviation from round to round, due to the special LOVA propellant ignited by a long primer. At a tactical firing range the penetrator can penetrate armor well in excess of 150 mm. When the penetrator forces its way through single or double armour protection, the spall from the core and armour plates devastates the inside of the target with high residual effect. APFSDS-T Mk II IM is under serial production for the Swedish Army’s CV 90 program.
