GRADLAR is an economical upgrade package for users of the 122mm, or BM-21 GRAD systems. It integrates the existing truck and main mechanical/hydraulic elements of the customer with major components and technology of the LAR. The system can launch either LAR or GRAD rockets to ranges up to 45 km, firing cluster payloads with the improved dispersion and area coverage of IMI's dual purpose bomblets.
The Romanian Army has contracted Aerostar SA of Bacau to upgrade 18 of its 40 APRA 122mm FMC multiple-rocket launcher (MRL) fire units to a new configuration called LAROM, with a view to upgrading all 160 systems in its inventory with it, reveals the report.
The upgrade allows the use of LAR-160mm rockets as well as the current 122mm Russian-designed rockets. The new 160mm rocket doubles the range to 41km and, according to Aerostar, offers superior firepower against personnel, vehicles and shelters. Other enhancements include a modern automated fire-control system and the option for guided rockets.
