Description The 76 mm L23A1 was developed from the similar but heavier 76 mm L5A1 which is no longer in production. The L5A1 76 mm gun was installed in the mechanical using a foot-firing pedal. The recoil system is hydropneumatic. During run-out the breech is opened by a semi-automatic cam and the empty case ejected; the breech remains open ready for reloading. Status Production as required. Installed in the FV101 Scorpion; Cougar (6 x 6) wheeled fire support vehicle (in service with Canada). The 76 mm Scorpion has now been withdrawn from service with the British Army.
