Designation:

40 CTA

Info
Manufactured by: Nexter
Type: Weapons & Weapon Systems
Name: Gun

Developed by CTAI, joint subsidiary of Giat Industries and Royal Ordnance, the 40 CTA weapon system uses the cased telescoped ammunition concept. Compared with a conventional weapon system, this new concept allows a reduction in the length of the weapon and in the volume and length of the munitions. The reduction in volume and the simplicity of the supply system enable this high-performance medium-calibre system to be integrated into vehicles normally limited to weapons of a lower calibre.

The weapon system consists of an externally-powered weapon (electric drive) and a linkless feed system which enables to fire, from the first shot, the selected type of ammunition among two types or more (depending on the configuration of the feed system, the number of types of ammunition is unlimited).

The use of case telescoped ammunition enables to greatly simplify the architecture of the weapon while providing the same compactness as that of a conventional 25 mm cannon. This simplification is also advantageous in terms of reliability, maintainability, acquisition and life-cycle costs.

The system is designed to be operated by a single man whether in normal or reversionary mode and as part of loading/unloading operations.

(40 x 255) medium-calibre weapon system designed for fitment, as a first fit or as an upgrade, to light armoured vehicles (from 12 tonnes) such as Infantry Fighting Vehicles, Reconnaissance Vehicles… This weapon is also suitable for use with anti-aircraft mountings or in naval applications for close-in defence missions or police missions.
