Northern Defence Industries Ltd (NDI) is a strategic alliance of some 100 companies based in an area stretching from Scotland to Yorkshire, with a combined annual turnover of £700m and over 8,500 staff. It is a not for profit company that exists to enable the members to develop their business in the global defence and aerospace industry.

The organisation is supported by One NorthEast, the regional development agency for the north east of England, and is affiliated to the British Naval Equipment Association (BNEA), Defence Manufacturers Association (DMA), SBAC and is a member of the UK Aerospace Forum.

NDI capitalises on the north's position as an engineering centre of excellence and encourages its members to continue to invest in new technology, research & development, and manufacturing development.

The membership plays an important role in maintaining and furthering the UK's technological basis. The organisation exists to help SME's build mutually advantageous relationships with prime contractors who would be unable to supply the full range of equipment, stores and services without their involvement.

The organisation produces a quarterly newsletter, NDI News, which is distributed widely amongst suppliers, prime contractors, the MoD and individuals in the defence world. NDI has occupied stands at Farnborough International Air Show and DSEi, with plans already in place to exhibit at similar events over the next few years. Export missions to the United States are also being planned.

NDI provides assistance and advice to members considering tendering for military contract opportunities.

NDI supports five special interest sub-groups: NDI Aerospace, Marine, Electronics and Systems Partnership, Land Systems and Services and Supplies. Members choose group membership according to their interests and markets in which they operate.

NDI operates on the principle that businesses can succeed and grow by clustering together in non-competitive collaborative groups to pursue business opportunities and deliver solutions. The drive to meet the demands of customers, who can source from any part of the world they choose, drives suppliers to improve performance and efficiency.

NDI assisted SAAB Bofors Dynamics (SBD) in winning MBT LAW, a programme to supply a new anti armour system to the British and Swedish armies. NDI identified a cluster of SME suppliers who could provide components - these companies will now receive orders of around £50 million over the next few years.

With its model now proved, NDI is in talks with other prime contractors to help them build effective supply clusters for MoD contracts. The organisation has played host to both bidders of the Future Aircraft Carriers project and its IPT leader, and one of the prime contractors bidding for the Future Integrated Soldier Technology (FIST) contract.

It has reached agreement with Raytheon and Lockheed Martin to be part of their Javelin team bidding for a medium range anti-tank weapon for the British Army.

NDI has received recognition from senior defence officials such as Lord Bach, Minister for Defence Procurement. He attended NDI's Business Development Seminar, "Network 2001" and spoke about the importance of organisations such as this. He returns to the north east as guest speaker for the NDI 2002 AGM.
