The RKhM-4-01 is designed for radiation and chemical agent reconnaissance day and night, under adverse meteorological conditions, in rough terrain when negotiating natural and artificial ground or water obstacles. The vehicle design is based on the BTR-80 APC.

The RKhM-4-01 vehicle

  • carries out field radiation level metering, conducts radioactivity testing of objects and samples

  • detects radiation (outside vehicle)

  • carries out automatic atmosphere testing for contaminants

  • conducts periodic tests for air contamination and contamination of objects and samples

  • conducts sampling for radioactivity tests and contaminating substance tests

  • flags contaminated areas

  • advises of contamination in the area of patrolling

  • conducts terrain orientation in adverse terrain and weather conditions, day and night

  • conducts weather observations

The vehicle carries the following special equipment:

  • IMD-21B (IMD-1r) dose rate meter

  • GSA-13 automatic gas detector

  • PGO-11 semiautomatic gas identifier

  • KPO-1 sampling equipment kit

  • DP-5V dose rate meter

  • VPKhR chemical agent detector kit

  • MK-3M meteorology kit

  • KZO-2 warning sign kit

  • SKhT chemical alert flare launcher with control panel

The vehicle is developed from the BTR-80 fully amphibious APC and retains the prototype's mobility, including on rough terrain. The RKhM-4-01 is fitted with communication equipment and the TNA-4-6 navigation equipment set.

The vehicle is equipped with group and individual NBC protection means for crew protection in contaminated areas.
