Oto Melara was found in 1905 for the production of guns and weapons systems for the Italian Navy and has become a world leader in the naval field, while Breda Meccanica Bresciana was established in 1925 for the production of small calibre guns which have been systematically updated and are still in service with the Italian and other Armed Forces.

Oto Melara reseach capabilties range from naval guns to ammunition, from artillery and armoured vehicles to anti-aircraft systems.

In 1985, Oto Melara entered into a consortium, on a 50 per cent basis, with IVECO, a company of the Fiat group, for the design, development and production of main battle tanks and armoured vehicles that are currently achieving significant international success.
